TUSCALOOSA | Ruth Miller Barlow, age 88, passed away after a sudden and brief illness with her loving husband of 67 years by her side. Services will be 1 p.m. today, January 18, 2014, at Magnolia Chapel South with Dr. Ken Dunivant officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South directing. Visitation will be 30 minutes prior to services at the funeral home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Isabelle and Harry E. Miller; and her sister, Elmer Jackson.
Survivors include her husband, Robert W. "Cookie" Barlow, Sr.; son, Robert W. Barlow, Jr. (Rhonda); nephews, John Jackson (Joan), Keith Jackson (Donna), and Harry Jackson (Carol); sister-in-law, Sybil Cooper; and grandchildren, Brandon and Nick Barlow.
She was born in Demopolis and moved with her family to Tuscaloosa as a teenager. She was a graduate of Tuscaloosa High School and the University of Alabama with a degree in Education. She retired from the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education after having spent 20 years teaching distributive education at Tuscaloosa High School. She had served as president of the Junior Welfare Association, Jester's Mardi Gras, and the Athenia Study Club, in addition to being active in numerous groups and organizations including the United Way and Red Cross.
Friends remember her as amiable, complimentary, always pleasant, and as an excellent leader.
Pallbearers will be Brandon and Nick Barlow, John, Keith and Harry Jackson.
Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Hugh Stegall, Robert Wheeler, Mary Jane and George Taylor, and all her neighbors, past and present, from Glendale Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First United Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa, or to the charity of one's choice.
