Marian Duncan (Deslattes)

Marian D. Deslattes

September 2, 1950 – October 28, 2022

Marian Annabel Duncan Deslattes was born September 2, 1950 in Albany, New York. She moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama after completing the first grade in Albany. Her parents were Mary Anglin Enslen Duncan of Birmingham, Alabama and Warren Lester Duncan, Jr. of Baltimore, Maryland. She is survived by her loving husband of fifty years, Douglas L. Deslattes, and their two daughters, April L. Deslattes and Elizabeth (Liz) D. Deslattes (Paula), and three loving grandchildren, Harrison Deslattes-White (age 5), Carter Deslattes-White and Clara Deslattes-White (both age 3).

She is also survived by a brother, Warren Lester Duncan, III (Frances) and a sister Carolyn Eula Duncan Davis (Richard). Also, she is survived by three sisters-in-law, Barbara Deslattes Fulmer (George), Linda Deslattes Laminack, Patti Deslattes Scozzaro (Ross), and many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews and many second cousins on her father’s side.

Marian earned a BS degree in elementary education from the University of Alabama after studying for two years at Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She chose to forego a full-time teaching career to focus on her husband and raising, teaching, and loving her two daughters. Marian and Doug became members of Southminster Presbyterian Church in 1975, about five years before April was born. April and Liz’s education began at Southminster Day School (SDS) because Marian understood the value of a strong Christian education. Both girls were baptized at Southminster and attended all grades of SDS until the family moved to Germantown, Tennessee. Upon returning to Birmingham in 2006, Marian and Doug rejoined Southminster. She has served the Church as a Deacon, and Elder and was a member of the SDS Board when she passed away. Her oldest grandson, Harrison, is currently in five-year-old kindergarten at SDS. She had hoped to see her three grandchildren graduate from SDS.

Marian and Doug met their sophomore year at Tuscaloosa High School and began dating at the beginning of their junior year. Doug finally got a driver’s license in August and Marian was the first girl he asked out. To his surprise, she said yes. In a second-to-none love story with some ups and downs, they married on May 20, 1972 in the First Presbyterian Church in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Doug was blessed with the best wife God could have given him.

Marian was a multi-talented woman. First and foremost, she was the best loving Nana to her grandchildren. She was an award-winning quilter and a member of the Birmingham Quilt Guild since 2006. She loved this hobby and created many intricate quilts. She liked to travel, grow orchids, and was skilled at making flower arrangements.

Her greatest accomplishment, however, was watching April and Liz grow and become the educated, accomplished girls they are today. The girls have advanced degrees in nursing and social work; fields where they can help and serve others. Marian was very proud of them.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 on Tuesday November 1, 2022 at Southminster Presbyterian Church. After the funeral service, the family will receive friends and guests in Grace Hall at the church. She will be buried in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park Cemetery next to her beloved parents after the visitation. The Reverend Tom Bryson will officiate the service. Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood, Alabama will assist.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Southminster Day School.
