TUSCALOOSA – Joe Thiele McCrary, age 49, of Yorktown Dr., died March 20, 1999, at DCH Tuscaloosa.  Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa with the Rev. Rickey Michaels and the Rev. Scott Reynolds officiating.  Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home directing.  Visitation is tonight from 6–8 at the funeral home.

            He is survived by his wife Debra Sims McCrary; daughters, Joanne Elizabeth McCrary and Margaret Sims McCrary, all of Tuscaloosa; and several aunts and uncles.  Mr. McCrary was president of The Insurance Center of Tuscaloosa.  He was a deacon and active member of The First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa, where he served as Sunday School Director, Chairman of the Committee on Committees, and past chairman of the Recreation and Insurance Committees.  He was an advisor to the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, where the Leadership Award is named in his honor.  He is the past president of the Tuscaloosa Jaycees, past executive director of the Alabama Jaycees, and U.S. J.C.I Senator.

            Active pallbearers will be Jon Beasley, John Burns, Jerry Thomas, Wayne Randall, Sandy Gordon, and Don Halsten.  Honorary pallbearers deacons and members of First Baptist Church, employees of The Insurance Center, employees of The University of Alabama Speech and Hearing Center, and members of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity at The University of Alabama.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Student Ministry of First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa.

            The Joe T. McCrary Scholarship was established in 2005 in memory of Joe McCrary, spouse of University of Alabama Speech and Hearing Center clinical supervisor, Debra McCrary. It is given each year to the outstanding senior in communicative disorders. The recipient is chosen by the academic and clinical faculty of the Department of Communicative Disorders.
